Kevin came to us from a SW Florida rancher who was looking to thin his herd. He had too many and was selecting the ones he was taking to market. We offered to take Kevin and Fiona to spare their lives and thus the start to Red Dragonfly Animal Rescue was put in to motion.
Fiona was brought to us with Kevin. They are inseparable. The once skittish baby cows have grown into scratch-loving, apple-eating and hay-devouring loves at the farm. They remind us feed time is at 4:00 pm everyday! Don't be late!!
Frank came from a petting zoo in Fort Myers. Or so we were told. Although accepting of humans, he initially had food aggression and would try to hurt the cows if they approached the feed trough. We kept them apart as we worked with Frank to give him the security and consistency he desperately needed. Frank is now with other donkey rescues, sharing hay, feed and shelter at Red Dragonfly Animal Rescue. He is the farm's protector and warns us (by braying) when anyone enters the farm...friend or foe.
Although Red Dragonfly is a large animal rescue, we had the opportunity to offer a home to Muscovy ducks. They have become our little helpers as they help manage the flies, mosquitoes, and bugs on the farm.
Why stop with ducks? Six roosters were left in a small cage in a store parking lot in July 2023. No food, no water, no shade. We scooped up the cage and brought them to the farm. They have befriended all the animals. They hang out with the cows at dinner time and help us with the mucking of the fields. Did I mention they are everyone's alarm clock?
Every farm has a dog. Meet Major:
he's been with us since the first arrivals. He's at our side as we feed, herd, and maintain the farm. Definitely our best friend!
Coffee and Sugar (formerly known as Eloise and Hillary) came from a kill pen in Ashboro, NC. We bid on and won Sugar only to be told that she had bonded with Coffee at the pen. We felt we needed to bring both of them home.
When they arrived, they grazed endlessly, as if they hadn't seen grass in forever. They were hesitant to approach us and reluctant to take treats from us. They are now frie
Josey came to us from a lovely lady that wanted to find her a home to live comfortably the rest of her life. Josey is 20 years old, and although she has spirit left in her, she prefers not to run or trot, limiting what she can offer a rider. She walks the pasture with us, grazes and is entertained by the donkeys. Welcome home, Josey!
Serenity is a 25 year old ex-barrel racer. When her career ended, she was left out to pasture without food, shelter or attention. In December 2022, a kind gentleman acquired her. Serenity was skin and bones as her coggins attests. He took care of her and brought her back to life. Unfortunately, she had a companion that wasn't as lucky. He wasn't a rider and wanted to find Serenity a soft lan
When we started Red Dragonfly Animal Rescue, our mission was and is to provide a safe, loving home to abandoned and unwanted animals. We are not in the business of breeding. We castrated Kevin (the bull) December 2022, not knowing that he had already made his move on Fiona. September 29th Simon entered our world and farm. He's curious, funny and a wonderful addition to our crew!
